Target audience: Grade 4-6 preservice teachers, support staff and teachers are encouraged to attend.

Each of us has four vocabularies: Words we understand when we hear them, words we can read, words we use in our speech, and words we use in our writing. We can also look at vocabulary as single words and phrases, or chunks of words. These two perspectives reveal that vocabulary in any language is a complex issue.

But how do we determine which sets of vocabulary to focus on when supporting language development for our wide range of student abilities, including multilingual? In what ways, is this language development aligned with the new grade 4-6 ELAL curriculum?

This interactive session will highlight universal instructional strategies in vocabulary development that supports students, including multilingual students, by uncovering some of the myths around second language vocabulary and looking at the research behind effective practices that support vocabulary development.

Stephanie Dodyk

Stephanie Dodyk is a Language Consultant with over 15 years experience in teaching and resource roles. After completing a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts degree in German Literature, Stephanie later went on to finish a Master of Education specializing in Teaching English as an Additional Language. In her work, Stephanie continually reflects on her journey of identity development and language learning while growing up as a second-generation Canadian and how it relates to students who are now adding English and Canada to their linguistic and cultural repertoires.

She is passionate about the empowering impact language and story have on building community. Her practice focuses on embracing the rich stories students bring with them as they add English to their learning journey and empowering educational professionals to hear them.

Kim Tackaberry

is a Designer of Professional Learning with the Calgary Regional Consortium. Her areas of focus include literacy and inclusive education. She is presently continuing her Master of Education Studies at Queen's University, specializing in literacy. Kim’s teaching career spans over 30 years, ten as a classroom teacher at Foothills Academy Society, a school specializing in children with Learning Disabilities and ADHD. Kim has designed several e-courses for teachers, titles include Learning Disabilities and Introduction to Literacy and Numeracy Progressions.
