TARGET AUDIENCE: TEACHERS OR ELL LEADERS WITH TWO OR MORE YEARS EXPERIENCE SUPPORTING ELL
Share and learn about implementing a framework to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in the mainstream classroom. Ciara Smith, an ESL Consultant with Elk Island Catholic Schools, will take the lead in our ELL Collaborative Community this year. Join us and work with other Calgary and area educators to explore various frameworks focused on providing Sheltered Instruction practices in the mainstream setting.

This Level 2 Collaborative Community is designed for classroom teachers and ELL Leaders who have a solid understanding of second language acquisition who are searching for ways to structure their lessons to better support ELLs. Participants will come away with a rich set of tools, resources, and learning activities that they can use to target ELL instruction in a manageable way.

Ciara Smithhas worked as a classroom teacher, an ELL Instructional Coach, and ESL Consultant in her ten years as an educator. During this time, she has taught at both the middle school and high school levels. Ciara completed her M. Ed in 2017 in the area of Educational Leadership with a focus on English Language Learners. After her graduate work, Ciara attained both her certification in TEFL and TEYL to further her understanding of how to better support English Language Learners. Ciara is currently working as an ESL Consultant for Elk Island Catholic School District.
Cora-Leah Schmittis currently the Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction. She has worked in various capacities in both rural and urban school divisions including classroom teacher, school administration and several central office positions. Her portfolios over the past several years have always included English Language Learners, an area she is deeply passionate about, and she is excited to be a part of this learning opportunity for teachers!
Kim Tackaberryis a Designer of Professional Learning with the Calgary Regional Consortium, areas of focus include literacy and inclusive education. Her teaching career spans over 28 years, ten as a classroom teacher at Foothills Academy Society, a school specializing in children with Learning Disabilities and ADHD. After a decade of classroom experience, Kim's role as Professional Development and Parent Education Manager shifted to supporting professional learning for educators. She has designed and created several e-learning opportunities such as Learning Disabilities e-course, Introduction to Literacy and Numeracy Progressions and What are Literacy & Numeracy? Kim is passionate about coaching teachers, particularly when their students are struggling with learning how to read. Apart from founder, Dr Rick Freeze, she is the sole Precision Reading presenter in North America.
