TARGET AUDIENCE: TEACHERS OR ELL LEADERS WITH TWO OR MORE YEARS EXPERIENCE SUPPORTING ELL

Share and learn about implementing a framework to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in the mainstream classroom. Ciara Smith, an ESL Consultant with Elk Island Catholic Schools, will take the lead in our ELL Collaborative Community this year. Join us and work with other Calgary and area educators to explore various frameworks focused on providing Sheltered Instruction practices in the mainstream setting.

Collaborative Community Session Outline:

  • Introduction to various classroom frameworks
  • Intentionally planning for ELLs by exploring:
    • Language Objectives
    • Making Content Accessible
    • Building Background Knowledge
    • Vocabulary Development
    • Review & Assessment

In addition to two in-person sessions with Ciara Smith, participants will engage in two interactive webinars as part their own going learning. During the interactive webinars, participates will blog to:

  • share resources and/or activities discussed in the previous in-person session
  • discuss success/'wins' they've experience with implementation
  • discuss challenges they've experience with implementation.

The webinars will be moderated by Cora-Leah Schmitt (Christ the Redeemer School District) and Kim Tackaberry.

This Level 2 Collaborative Community is designed for classroom teachers and ELL Leaders who have a solid understanding of second language acquisition who are searching for ways to structure their lessons to better support ELLs. Participants will come away with a rich set of tools, resources, and learning activities that they can use to target ELL instruction in a manageable way.

This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education
