About the Session

TARGET AUDIENCE: THIS SERIES IS FOR EDUCATORS WHO ARE NEW TO DESIGN THINKING

Session 1: Introduction to Design Thinking in Education

In this  interactive webinar, we will:

  • Explore the research and theory behind design thinking as a discipline and as it applies to teaching and learning
  • Hear stories of how teachers have used design thinking to solve organizational challenges, as an approach to task design, and as a method of inquiry for students to address issues of real concern
  • Connect design thinking with the curriculum and cross-curricular competencies

Session 2: Developing Deep Empathy

In this  interactive webinar, we will:

  • Experience part of the design thinking process, focusing on empathy
  • Engage in problem-finding within your own teaching context
  • Gain competence and confidence in interviewing for empathy

Session 3: From Ideation to Prototyping

In this  interactive webinar, we will:

  • Experience part of the design thinking process, focusing on defining, ideation, and prototyping
  • Share and interpret the findings from the interview for empathy
  • Define the problem to be addressed
  • Ideate solutions collaboratively
  • Prototype a solution to the problem

This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education.

 

About the Presenter(s)

Erin Quinn

Erin is a learning leader with the Calgary Board of Education. She uses design thinking extensively to deepen and develop a pedagogical approach that holds learners at the centre of the learning process as sense-makers, problem finders, and creative change agents. Erin is a session instructor with the University of Calgary's Design Thinking for Innovation Interdisciplinary MEd. She is an alumni coach with the Teacher's Guild, an international platform for collaboration in design thinking in education, and a moderator for #dtk12chat, a weekly Twitter chat discussing design thinking in K-12 education.

 

Stephanie Bartlett

Stephanie is a PhD candidate at the University of Calgary in Curriculum and Learning. She is passionate about discovering ways to help educators to understand that they are designers of learning and how they can guide their students to take action about issues that matter. Her recent work as a Learning Specialist with the Calgary Board of Education involved exploring the connection between design thinking and Indigenous pedagogies. Stephanie is a sessional instructor with the University of Calgary’s Design Thinking for Innovation Interdisciplinary MEd.

Tracy Dalton is a teacher and learning leader in the Calgary Board of Education. She has led many professional learning sessions with teachers to explore the power of design thinking and creativity in creating authentic and engaging learning experiences for students.
