TARGET AUDIENCE: ALL K-6 EDUCATORS, COACHES, PRE SERVICDE TEACHERS AND EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND

Words Their Way is the gold standard of word study programs, but in practice, it can be a nightmare to implement. Teachers often become overwhelmed with Words Their Way and as a result, give up on using it in their classroom. Join us for this 3-part series to find out why this type of word study instruction is important and how it can be easily executed. We will uncover the ways in which this program improves spelling development and fosters reading and writing acquisition. See the amazing outcomes that many classroom teachers have achieved using this word study approach. You will leave with hands-on strategies and activities to be used immediately and will see how Words Their Way leads to gold medal results.

Please note, this series is divided into 3 sessions to better meet your needs:

  • Thursday, January 13th (4-5:30): Session 1 is for those new to the WTW program: Join us to dig into the theory and research behind Words Their Way. In this session, we will also look at how to use and score spelling inventories, showing you where to start instruction. Click HERE to register for only part 1.
  • Thursday, January 27th (4-5:30): Sessions 2 is for everyone: In this session, we will review how to group your students based on their spelling inventory results, how best to implement the program with a 6-day rotation schedule, and ways in which you can monitor your student’s progress.   • Wednesday, February 9th (4-5:30): Session 3 is also for everyone: As you try WTW in your classroom, bring your questions, ideas, and problems of practice to this final session, where we will take time to collaboratively problem-solve your queries. 
About the Presenter(s)

Michelle Bence 's passion is early literacy. She is an enthusiastic educator with over 18 years of teaching experience. Over the past few years, Michelle has worked extensively with several school boards in Alberta, investigating professional teacher learning and evidence-based early literacy practice. Currently, Michelle is a Ph.D. student at the University of Calgary, examining the connection between oral language development and early literacy acquisition.

Miriam Ramzy is the Director of Student Learning, Jr K - 6, for the Foothills School Division. The focus of her education, teaching practice, and professional development endeavours has been on early learning and literacy. Miriam has her PhD from the Werklund School of Education; her doctoral work looked at early literacy learning in a grade one setting, with an emphasis on writing instruction, and the role of printing and word study. Her passion for supporting teachers in building powerful literacy classrooms, where all learners experience success, drives her work.
