Science Collaborative Community: Keeping the Foundational Principles Alive and Well During COVID

About the Session

ARPDC is hosting 4 new High School Collaborative Communities.   There is need to balance physical distancing and safety measures with effective pedagogical practices.   This can be especially challenging in the areas of: 

  • Science Labs
  • CTS
  • Physical Education
  • Band

Join us to learn alongside other Science educators to brainstorm a variety of ways to best support your students in various learning formats (online, in-person, hybrid).


Our monthly Zoom sessions will allow teachers to collaborate and share ideas, resources, strategies and successes. You will meet and share with colleagues across school authorities to navigate the future uncharted landscape of learning with COVID safety measures in mind.

Whether you are an experienced teacher or a first year teacher, come and join in on the conversations.

About the Presenter(s)

Charles Curtis got his BSc in Chemistry at the University of Waterloo (2002) and his BEd at Nipissing University (2006). Charles taught in Ontario for three years before coming to Calgary (2009). He has been at Notre Dame for the past 11 years. He taught IB chemistry at ND until they switched to the Advanced Placement program 4 years ago. Two areas of educational interest include: technology and formative assessment.

Evangeline Blais is a high school science teacher and the Science Coordinating Teacher at Bishop Grandin High School, and typically teaches Chemistry 20/20AP, Chemistry 30, and some general science courses (10/20/30). This is her 9th year teaching science. Evangeline is currently working on adjusting and updating her instructional and assessment practices as we work with the current realities of our education system and the added expectations due to the management of teaching during a pandemic. These include the use of more virtual labs or lab demos rather than full labs, video links to support lessons and more opportunities for formative assessment (both online and in-person).

Wanda Dechant is a Designer of Professional Learning with the Calgary Regional Consortium.  Her role includes supporting teachers, E.A.’s, school admin, learning coaches and parents in the area of K-12 Math. Wanda began teaching math and science in 2000, her teaching experience extends from grades 7 – 12.  For the past 6 years Wanda’s work has included a focus on K-6 Mathematics.  Three critical aspects of learning that Wanda embeds into her sessions include:

  • Increasing student (and teacher) self-confidence in math
  • Students engaging in visible learning with their peers
  • Students as mathematicians

Wanda is part of the development team for the Elementary Math Professional Learning project.
