GRADE 3 TO GRADE 6 TEACHERS, TEACHER ASSISTANTS, SPECIAL EDUCATION AND AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM STAFF, CURRICULUM COORDINATORS, AND MATH COACHES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.

Are you looking for engaging and effective ways to help your upper elementary students gain confidence and competence with key math concepts?  Come prepared to play math games that incorporate the use of cards, dice, multi-sided dice, number lines, fraction manipulatives, dominoes and other easily found math manipulatives.  Concepts covered include:

  • Understanding Place Value System including Whole Numbers and Decimal
  • Fractions, Decimals and Percent including Operations with Fractions
  • Numbers and Operations in Base Ten, Multi-Digit Operations including Order of Operations
  • Fact Fluency Intervention - Basic Facts
  • Statistics, Data Management and Organization of Data in Charts and Graphs

Throughout the workshop participants will have opportunity to play each game, learn how to differentiate the activities, how to develop math journal extensions, maximize math talk and how to use the game activities for assessment purposes.  Student samples, gameboards, ideas for whole/small group instruction will be provided.  Interspersed will be practical ideas for classroom organization and management to ensure effective implementation of games as a teaching strategy.  Ideas for developing weekly lesson plans, and samples will be shared.  Participants will be able to implement what they learn the next day in their classrooms and schools.
