TARGET AUDIENCE: GRADES K-3 TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND COACHES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND
Rich tasks, collaborative work, number talks, problem-based learning, direct instruction…with so many possible approaches, how do we know which ones work the best? In Visible Learning for Mathematics, six acclaimed educators assert it’s not about which one—it’s about when—and show you how to design high-impact instruction so all students demonstrate more than a year’s worth of mathematics learning for a year spent in school.
Our Math Collaborative Communities will parallel the conversations and content shared in the Visible Learning for Mathematics series (separate registration at, https://www.crcpd.ab.ca/program/1465). You are welcome to register for both the Visible Learning in Math series, as well as the Math Collaborative Community, and you are also welcome to choose only the Math Collaborative Community (we will share the highlights with you in our discussions).
With our division 1 colleagues, we will meet 3 times over the school year to dig deeper into the content of Visible Learning for Mathematics, and to share and collaborate with each other. We will also all have access to an ongoing eCommunity where we can continue to share experiences, ideas and resources over the entire school year (membership in this eCommunity is automatically included).
For the Division 1 Collaborative Community we have Tracey Drummond and Wanda Dechant as our facilitators.
This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education.
Tracey Drummondis an assistant principal with Rocky View Schools and is currently working at RancheView School in Cochrane (grades K – 8). Throughout her teaching career, Tracey has been an elementary learning support teacher as well as a classroom teacher in grades 1 and 2. She worked as a curriculum specialist in the area of math and science for Rocky View Schools and was seconded to the Calgary Regional Consortium for two years as a math consultant. Continued learning and ongoing projects are part of Tracey’s dedication to professional learning; for example, this upcoming school year RancheView will be piloting the Mathology resources in their K – 2 classrooms. RancheView school has also been actively using Cathy Fosnot’s math philosophy and supporting resources. If you have previously worked with Tracey, you know that she has a wealth of experience and knowledge both of which she generously shares with her colleagues. If you are interested in sharing ideas and practical strategies, come and join us in the Visible Learning for Mathematics Division 1 Collaborative Community.
Wanda Dechantis currently working for the Calgary Regional Consortium in a role that includes support for Math k - 12, Educational Technology, and Learning Commons. Wanda began teaching math in 2000 in a classroom, and then transitioned to teaching math online for a number of years. Her experience has been with grades 7 - 12 and she is excited to see all of the connections between elementary math and high school math. Wanda is part of the development team for the provincial Elementary Math Professional Learning project.
