TARGET AUDIENCE: K-GRADE 2 EARLY EDUCATION TEACHERS AND ALL TEACHERS WHO WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND EARLY LITERACY INTERVENTION ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.
This 2-part professional learning series is designed for early education teachers, but will be of interest to ALL teachers who want to learn more about phonological awareness and early literacy interventions. Participants will be asked to administer the RRST and bring results to Session #2.
Research has found that early identi cation of phonological awareness weaknesses and implementation of appropriate and effective interventions can signi cantly decrease the risk of reading dif culties and reading disabilities. The Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta (LDAA) developed the Reading Readiness Screening Tool (RRST) in order to provide teachers with an accessible and affordable universal screening tool that will enable them to screen for phonological awareness weaknesses and other reading readiness skills, identify student needs, and inform instructional classroom programming.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will:
Increase their understanding of phonological skills and concepts of reading acquisition
Examine the connection between phonological awareness weakness and reading dif culties/disabilities
Learn how to administer, score and interpret the results of the RRST
Practice administration and scoring of the RRST
Share and discuss RRST results
Learn how to interpret RRST results
Learn how to use the results of the RRST to inform classroom instructional programming
Explore reading interventions and best practices for the classroom
This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education.
