Remember when all teachers were to be "teachers of reading"—and those “strategy of the week” activities that teachers were asked to use whether or not they supported the curriculum or the learning goals? Thankfully, we now understand the importance of interdisciplinary literacy; reading, writing, speaking, reasoning and doing within the disciplines. With this approach, strategies morph into disciplinary tools that deepen student involvement and understanding in all subject areas. As students begin to use literacy the way experts do, they read and write about content, solve problems, ask questions, make decisions, discuss topics, and develop knowledge in a way that truly sticks. Join ReLeah Cossett Lent, author of This is Disciplinary Literacy, in an interactive workshop where teachers blend their subject expertise with relevant literacy practices that replace “covering” content with deep, engaged learning.

ReLeah Lentwas a middle and high school English, social studies and journalism teacher before becoming a founding member of a statewide literacy project at the University of Central Florida. While there, she worked with a team to develop Florida’s Reading Endorsement courses and coordinated literacy leadership teams in schools across the state. She is now an international consultant— speaking, writing, and providing workshops on topics ranging from literacy to leadership teams.
ReLeah has authored eleven books on education and has been published in numerous journals, including Educational Leadership, the Journal of Staff Development, and NCTE’s English Journal as well as being a frequent speaker for these organizations and in many schools and districts. Her latest book titles include This is Disciplinary Literacy: Reading, Writing, Thinking and Doing. . .Content Area by Content Area (Corwin, 2016), and Disciplinary Literacy in Action: How to Create and Sustain a School-wide Culture of Deep Reading, Writing, and Thinking, Common Core CPR: What about the Adolescents Who Struggle. . .or Just Don’t Care? (Corwin, 2013) and Overcoming Textbook Fatigue (ASCD, 2012).
ReLeah is the recipient of both NCTE and ALA’s Intellectual Freedom Award, in addition to being honored with the PEN First Amendment Award in 1999. In 2013 she received state education awards from Wisconsin and Florida.
